Ontario Ministry of Health reverses course on guardianship requirement for disabled woman

Ministry of Health apologizes and apologizes again.

The Ministry of Health has been forced to reverse course after being forced to admit they made a mistake about how disability was to be identified in a disabled adult’s file.

On Monday, the ministry announced the province would once again be implementing the change from the last time it was implemented by Health and Long-Term Care Minister Eric Hoskins.

That change would have moved the eligibility test to only considering whether a person would be able to provide for their basic care, or how often and in what kind of care they require assistance with.

The change was originally announced by Health and Long-Term Care Minister Eric Hoskins on May 6.

The change, however, was done without the proper support of the disability community, the Disability Committee and the Ontario Public Service Alliance.

In response, I have personally requested that the Ontario Public Service Alliance and the Disability Committee meet with the Ministry of Health on April 26 to inform on the proposed implementation of the change.

We can learn a lot from our disability community about how we can better support and protect Ontarians with disability.

Today I meet with Minister of Health Eric Hoskins to discuss the implementation of this change and how his department can best support the disability sector of the Ontario Community Supported Living Model.

The Government of Canada funded the Government of Ontario’s Community Supported Living Model (CSSLM) program in order to create better supported living conditions for families and individuals with disabilities. In partnership with the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the Government of Ontario is implementing the CSSLM program from June 1, 2015 to March 31, 2018.
