Tom Carper, Senior Senator from Delaware and Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement following the confirmation of his former colleague and Senator from Delaware, Sen. Jeff Merkley, to head the Bureau of Land Management:
“I’m pleased that my former colleague, Jeff Merkley, has been confirmed to lead the Bureau of Land Management, but more important, I’m pleased that Jeff will be able to return to Delaware to be with his family, which we know he’ll sorely miss. I wish him well in the important task ahead.”
Sen. Carper was referencing former Senator Jeff Merkley’s wife Tammy, who recently announced she is facing breast cancer. Although Sen. Carper attended the Judiciary Committee hearing, he has not yet been briefed on the details. Senator Carper previously called Merkley an “extraordinary public servant” during the confirmation hearing.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-ND) announced on Wednesday that he was supporting Jeff Merkley’s confirmation for the next head of the Bureau of Land Management. Bacon, a freshman congressman who serves with Merkley in the House, said he made the decision to support the former Senator’s nomination after talking with him over the phone. “I’ve spoken to Jeff a number of times about the agency. … He makes his decisions based on the law and based on the underlying facts and it’s our job to live up to the standards that we set for ourselves,” Bacon said.
