If you have something in your blood that you are good at, you should go after it.

We all need balance, but when it comes to career and investing in yourself, most of us are too afraid to quit to make it happen. And if you do want to walk away from a job or career, not because you’re miserable and willing to give up on that, but because you’re not happy, or even happy in your current job, then it could hurt your job search in the long run.

More than 50% of respondents said they were “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to quit their jobs if they felt uninspired by their current work, according to CareerBuilder’s 2018 Job Confidence Survey, which polled more than 4,500 U.S. adults.

However, three-quarters of those who were “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to quit their jobs in the next year said they would explore opportunities outside of their company, rather than figure out a way to leave.

If you work hard to build relationships, you should never be afraid to let them go. If you feel stagnant in your career and don’t love what you do, it’s better to explore a career change.

In fact, researchers at Kronos Inc. found that in today’s fast-paced workplace, employees have less time to stick with one job because they must be available to multiple departments and staff at all times.

“The globalization of modern offices is responsible for the significant increase in the number of people who are ‘at the office’ more than they were 10 years ago, so more time is spent working,” said Dan Thomas, senior director of Global Workforce, Kronos, in a statement. “And with technology allowing more remote assignments, more employees are staying busy but not in the way they expected.”

This could be a good time to investigate a career change because, more than ever, you’ll have a bigger pool of clients to choose from when looking for the right job.

“This is a great time to begin looking for your next career, which will allow you to explore how you can continue learning and grow your skills in order to enhance your own opportunities and make career changes,” Thomas added.

And if you can’t completely leave your current company, try to help manage a team. Do what you can to contribute. Whether you work remotely or are based in an office, you can always make sure you’re providing feedback on projects you’re involved in and even be the go-to person to help other workers keep the office running smoothly.

“For instance, this might be helpful for managers who are new to their position or have goals that require collaboration,” Thomas said. “And similarly, employees with a specific skill set can use their expertise to guide their team to achieve a given task.”

The people at Kronos evaluated 32,000 people who had worked for more than three years at their company. This study was done using a survey tool called Kronos DITM that allows employees to contribute their personal information, research challenges and tasks in areas such as administration, human resources, marketing, product management, engineering and IT.

So what do you do if you’re hesitant to quit? It might be a good idea to start by enjoying the things you’re good at. If you have something in your blood that you are good at, you should go after it. “Do you like the people you work with? Perhaps you are working in a field you are passionate about. If you can set a goal to be an even greater performer at your current position, you could save yourself hours of redundant effort and save your company money in the long run,” Thomas said.

To find the best job in your industry, ask for recommendations from people you know and listen to advice from those who work in your field. You should also understand that there are plenty of other people who work in your field and know what it’s like to be in the same role. As Thomas says, “while you are constantly learning, people who have previously worked in the same industry can really help guide you to the best decisions.”

So don’t be afraid to start that job search. We all need balance, but when it comes to career and investing in yourself, most of us are too afraid to quit to make it happen. And if you do want to walk away from a job or career, not because you’re miserable and willing to give up on that, but because you’re not happy, or even happy in your current job, then it could hurt your job search in the long run.
